RECOGNIZED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE STATE OF TEXAS FOR HIS EFFORTS THAT STARTED A LEGACY THAT HAS IMPACTED THE NATION IN A REMARKABLE WAY.

R E S O L U T I O N 
 
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor
 1-2     Leonel "Muy" Garza of Freer, Texas, for his efforts in founding the
 1-3     Muy Grande deer hunting contest and building it into one of the
 1-4     most anticipated events of its kind in the nation; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Mr. Garza initiated the contest in 1965 as a
 1-6     promotion for the gas station where he was employed and the event
 1-7     has grown dramatically since that time, now boasting two dozen
 1-8     categories of competition as well as a number of prizes; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, The Muy Grande deer hunting contest is a premier
1-10     event for outdoorsmen across the nation and has been the subject of
1-11     three books, two documentary videos, and a number of articles in
1-12     major hunting magazines; and
1-13           WHEREAS, Among the many well-known individuals who have
1-14     participated in the event are Earl Campbell, Bob Lilly, Ty Detmer,
1-15     Slim Pickens, and The Honorable Gib Lewis; and
1-16           WHEREAS, During the course of the deer hunting contest, the
1-17     city of Freer swells from its normal population of 4,000 to three
1-18     times that number, and this significant influx of people is a major
1-19     economic boon to the city and surrounding area; and
1-20           WHEREAS, A true pillar of the community, Mr. Garza has also
1-21     served his fellow citizens through a variety of civic organizations
1-22     and he was deservedly recognized for his many contributions in 1973
1-23     when he was named Freer Citizen of the Year; and
1-24           WHEREAS, He has been supported in all his endeavors by his
 2-1     devoted wife, Elda, and their five daughters Leticia, Nori, Noelia,
 2-2     Elsa, and Imelda; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, The Lone Star State is justifiably renowned for its
 2-4     amazing variety of outdoor activities, and by adding the Muy Grande
 2-5     deer hunting contest to that remarkable spectrum of events, Leonel
 2-6     Garza has performed a service truly worthy of special recognition;
 2-7     now, therefore, be it
 2-8           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas
 2-9     Legislature hereby congratulate Leonel Garza for creating and
2-10     promoting the Muy Grande deer hunting contest and extend to him
2-11     sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness in the
2-12     future; and, be it further
2-13           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-14     prepared for Mr. Garza as an expression of high regard by the Texas
2-15     House of Representatives.
