Hi All -

Hola mis amigos cazadores!
Welcome to the Muy Grande Deer Contest!
If there was ever a time to go hunting it’s now…the 2007-2008 hunting
season will be the best ever!
Due to the abundance of rain beginning in the fall of 2006 throughout
the spring and summer of 2007, my prediction is that records will be
broken throughout the state of Texas. In my 42 years of running this
deer contest, bucks scoring 200 + were unheard of. Today on our
leader board, we already have 3… with the
general season not even beginning until November. Landowners today are
more selective in scouting their deer herd and have better game
management then years ago. They understand that deer must age and be
fully mature before being harvested.
I’m looking forward to how the season progresses and I’m especially
looking forward to my third whitetail deer hunting video…to be released
during this season as well. As most of you already know, I put down my
rifle several years ago and today let my eyes fall behind my video
camera.
This video contains a tremendous amount of video footage that I’ve been
accumulating over the last 3 years from 2 South Texas ranches. I was
fortunate enough to capture the drought of 2006 as well as the beauty
and livelihood of South Texas after seasons of much needed rain. A
minimum of at least 20 buck fights are seen throughout the video as
well.
This video also plays special tribute to a good “deer” friend of mine,
the late Stan Slayton, former outdoors writer for the Houston Post. Many,
many years ago, I gave Mr. Slayton a set of locked deer antlers of two
whitetail deer that had fought to their death…over a doe. Slayton took
those antlers back to Houston and much to my surprise, wrote an article
about whitetail deer fighting to their death. The only ones to benefit
from their death would be the varmints and the humans who would later
find the remains.
Over the last year or so, I started thinking about Stan’s article and how he
named it, “Muy Grande: A Battle for Love and Life.” This article will be
brought back to life through my third video and will appropriately be
named after Mr. Slayton’s article.
I’m 67 years old now and looking back over my life I see so many events
take place when in actuality; my plans were to be somewhere else. The
Muy Grande Deer Contest is one of those things. It was simply supposed
to be a gimmick to attract customers to come by my gas station and buy
more gasoline. However, it has done so much more. It provided for my
family and actually benefited the State of Texas by making land owners
realize that you can make a few more dollars by managing your deer herd
as well as your cattle industry.
I hope you enjoy my next video… to be out this fall. It, like my
contest, was simply meant to be…. but now.... |

Sincerely,
Leonel "Muy" Garza |
